Florianópolis is the capital of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. The municipality comprises the main island, the Island of Santa Catarina, the mainland and some small surrounding islands. The city has a population of 461,525 inhabitants, according to estimates for 2014 by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), is the second most populous city in the state (after Joinville) and 47 of Brazil.4 The metropolitan area has an estimated population of 1,096,476 inhabitants, the 21st largest in the country. The city is known for having a high quality of life, being the Brazilian capital with the highest score in the Human Development Index (HDI), calculated by UNDP, the Unidas.6 Nations

The economy of Florianópolis is heavily based on information technology, tourism and serviços.9 The city has 42 beaches and is a center of surfing activity. The US newspaper The New York Times reported in 2009 that "Florianopolis was the year of destiny" 10 Newsweek found that the municipality is one of the "ten most dynamic cities in the world" in 2006.11 The View magazine ranked the city as "the best place to live in Brazil, "12 while the Entrepreneurial City Index (ECI), prepared by the Brazilian branch of US NGO Endeavor, chose the city as the best environment for entrepreneurship in país.13 As a result of this exposure, Florianópolis is growing as a second home for many Paulistas, Argentines, Americans and Europeans.

Most of the population lives on the continent and in parts of central and north of the main island. The southern half is less inhabited. Many small commercial fishermen populate the island. Fishing boats, the lace makers, folklore, cuisine and the colonial architecture contribute to the growth of tourism and attract resources that compensate for the lack of a large industrial park. Villages immersed in tradition and history, as Santo Antonio de Lisboa and Ribeirão da Ilha still resist the advances of modernidade.14

The Hercílio Luz International Airport serves the city. Florianópolis is home to the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) and the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina and two campuses of the State University of Santa Catarina, among other higher and vocational education institutions.
